Minister Susan McIlveen
Susan McIlveen (she/her) was born and raised in Woodstock, Ontario. In the past decade, she’s lived and worked in Manitoba, Newfoundland & Labrador, Saskatchewan, and Ontario, and is happy to return to Manitoba in 2021 to serve God with the Prairie Spirit United Church community of faith.
A card-carrying “church nerd,” Susan’s Christian faith was emboldened by an excitingly ecumenical adolescence: she attended Presbyterian worship (best governance order); babysat for a Salvation Army church school (best bands); sang in an Anglican choir (best liturgy); and joined a Pentecostal youth group (cutest boys, alas). Today, she honours God in both “conservative” and “progressive” expressions, relishing how God shows up in many ways to meet us wherever we are.
Susan enjoys helping people to connect with God, others, and creation through Jesus Christ, and to live wholeheartedly and joyfully into their unique calling. Allowing God to move through our lives creates amazing (and sometimes unsettling or disrupting) possibilities. If you want to dig deeper into God’s call to transformed living and right relationship, Susan would welcome companions as she stumbles along the Jesus Way.
Custodian Emmanuel (Manny) Kambale
Emmanuel, who prefers to be called Manny, arrived at PSUC as our new permanent custodian in early May.
Manny arrived in Winnipeg in 2010 from the Congo via Uganda as a refugee. Just imagine his first Manitoba winter! Brrrr! Manny is fluent in English, French and Swahili.
If you happen to be in the church when Manny is working, be sure to say hello… or bonjour… or hujambo… he’ll happily respond to all three!
Music Director Renate Rossol
Renate has worked professionally as a church musician for over ten years, and has enjoyed leading musical worship at Prairie Spirit UC, and (formerly) Sturgeon Creek UC since 2015. She holds a Master of Music (Collaborative Piano) and Bachelor of Music (Performance and Music History) from the University of Manitoba, and an ARCT in Piano Performance. She also studied vocal accompaniment at the Vienna Conservatory (now The Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna) from 2012-2013, and has performed as both a soloist and collaborative pianist in Austria, Canada, and the United States. During her degrees, Renate studied conducting and attended summer training programs to further enhance her love of working with singers. These programs include the Vancouver International Song Institute (Art Song Theatre and Contemporary Music Workshop with Jake Heggie, Vancouver, BC), Alpenkammermusik (Liesing, Austria), Opera NUOVA (Edmonton, AB), and the Franz-Schubert Institute (Baden, Austria). These experiences led her to her work as a music director and rehearsal pianist for musical theatre and opera productions, as well as her work as a church choir director. Renate is also in demand as a recital partner, collaborating with and coaching singers across Canada and abroad. In addition to her work with singers, she teaches a small studio of pianists, and is a sought-after adjudicator and masterclass clinician.
Office Administrator Sherri Van Aert
Sherri is a fellow St. James’er. Although new to the Prairie Spirit Team, she has many years of experience in the United Church. As Office Administrator, she is available during the week to answer your questions and keep you in touch with what’s happening in our church community. If you are seeking a new church home, she would welcome a chat with you!
Her responsibilities are varied from being the first person you meet as you enter our building to answering phones and emails, data entry, publishing the Weekly Friday Update and PS newsletter and as they say on job descriptions “other duties as assigned”. Sherri is very knowledgeable about office procedures and as she says she “knows what it takes to pull an office together”. She has indicated that “she is glad to be working with the good folks at PSUC”. She invites you to drop in at sometime and ask her about her friendly furry friend with which she is pictured.
Oversight Council Executive
Chairperson Val Goodridge
As a member of the former Silver Heights United Church and now a committed member of Prairie Spirit, I am proud to be the Chairperson of the Oversight Council. I enjoy working with the dedicated group of people who sit on the Council and I look forward to welcoming new members as they volunteer to take on leadership positions. This is an exciting time for Prairie Spirit United Church as we build a strong, vibrant community of faith in St James.
