Rev. Paul DuVal
Candace joined our office staff in January 2020 and is excited to share her gifts with us. Having grown up on a farm in southeastern Manitoba, her prairie roots run deep. Candace is an applicant for ministry in the United Church of Canada and is involved in the wider work of the UCC. When not at Prairie Spirit, Candace works as the Youth Group Coordinator at the United Church in Meadowood and is also completing her practicum for a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology degree. Candace has a Bachelor of Human Resources and Labour Relations degree and has also completed a Master of Divinity. Candace has begun work towards a Doctor of Ministry with anticipated research focusing on the perceptions, experiences, and competency of ministers in providing care to members of the congregation with mental illness or in crisis. Candace is passionate about social justice and is especially interested in issues related to poverty, homelessness, and mental health. She previously worked as the Communications and Development Assistant at West Broadway Community Ministry for three years and has also worked at St. Matthews Maryland Community Ministry. As well, Candace has been employed for four years providing administrative support to two churches of other denominations. Candace’s favourite verse is Psalm 37:10-11. In her “free time” Candace chases after her pet bunny, Lola.

Renate has worked professionally as a church musician for over ten years, and has enjoyed leading musical worship at Prairie Spirit UC, and (formerly) Sturgeon Creek UC since 2015. She holds a Master of Music (Collaborative Piano) and Bachelor of Music (Performance and Music History) from the University of Manitoba, and an ARCT in Piano Performance. She also studied vocal accompaniment at the Vienna Conservatory (now The Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna) from 2012-2013, and has performed as both a soloist and collaborative pianist in Austria, Canada, and the United States. During her degrees, Renate studied conducting and attended summer training programs to further enhance her love of working with singers. These programs include the Vancouver International Song Institute (Art Song Theatre and Contemporary Music Workshop with Jake Heggie, Vancouver, BC), Alpenkammermusik (Liesing, Austria), Opera NUOVA (Edmonton, AB), and the Franz-Schubert Institute (Baden, Austria). These experiences led her to her work as a music director and rehearsal pianist for musical theatre and opera productions, as well as her work as a church choir director. Renate is also in demand as a recital partner, collaborating with and coaching singers across Canada and abroad. In addition to her work with singers, she teaches a small studio of pianists, and is a sought-after adjudicator and masterclass clinician.
